For two weeks each year, the Cook Islands stops what it's doing and celebrates.

Te Maeva Nui is our national celebration of self-government, and it is the single best time to see this country as it sees itself. Teams from almost every island travel to Rarotonga to compete in drumming, chant, choir and 'ura (dance). Months of rehearsal, hand-made costumes of rito and pare (coconut fronds), and passionate performers on one stage. It is not a show staged forvisitors. It's the real thing, and visitors are welcome to enjoy the celebrations.

Te Maeva Nui 2027 runs from 23 July to 4 August 2027 in Rarotonga, marking 62 years of Cook Islands self-government.

The 2027 theme

The Ministry of Cultural Development has announced the theme as Te Ūki Tūpaupau Tūatau – Te Ora ia o taku Matakeinanga, or "The Rising Generation – The Life of My Tribe". It puts young Cook Islanders at the centre of the celebration, the ones learning the chants, the dances and the language from their elders and carrying them forward.

For visitors, that means a 2027 programme with real energy behind it: youth groups, school performers and young dancers taking the lead, backed by the generations who taught them.

What to expect

• Nightly island performances of drumming, 'ura, imene and pe'e
• Food stalls and craft markets built around the celebrations
• Constitution Day on 4 August, the emotional peak of the fortnight
• A Rarotonga running at full volume, extended trading, packed markets and a whole island in a good mood

Planning your trip

Te Maeva Nui falls in our peak season, and this is one of the busiest fortnights of the year. Flights and accommodation book out well in advance, so lock both in early. Performance schedules, venues and ticketing for 2027 will be confirmed closer to the event.
