Two young Cook Islanders are set to take the next step in their journey toward becoming leaders in the tourism industry, following their selection for Te Arata’a o te Pae Turoto Scholarship.

Ellenoah Oti and Abel Papai have been awarded the prestigious scholarship, recognising their potential to contribute to the future of the Cook Islands tourism sector.

The scholarship is a key initiative designed to support emerging and talented Cook Islanders to pursue further education and build capability in tourism, sustainability, and leadership. It also reflects a shared commitment between Cook Islands Tourism, Air New Zealand, and Pacific Resort Hotel Group to invest in the future of the country’s tourism sector.

For Ellenoah and Abel, this opportunity will see them study in New Zealand at the Auckland University of Technologyi (AUT), where they will undertake a Certificate in Arts designed to align with the evolving needs of the tourism industry.

Their studies will include key subjects such as Tourism and Sustainability and Sustainability Leadership, alongside areas like Marketing Insights and Climate Action. This combination ensures they gain both industry knowledge and broader skills in leadership, critical thinking, and sustainable development.

The transition to AUT follows the closure of the previous training provider and represents a strengthened academic pathway for the scholarship, providing a university-based learning environment that supports long-term progression and deeper capability building beyond operational tourism skills.

In addition to their studies, both recipients will receive a comprehensive support package, including return airfares, full tuition and accommodation. They will also complete a 6-month paid internship that offers practical hands-on experience within the industry.

This integrated approach ensures that Ellenoah and Abel are equipped with both academic knowledge and real-world experience, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the Cook Islands tourism sector.

Industry Development Manager at Cook Islands Tourism, Tina Kae, says the scholarship continues to play an important role in building the next generation of industry leaders.

“This programme is about investing in our people and ensuring we continue to grow a tourism sector that is sustainable, resilient, and grounded in our values.”

Cook Islands Tourism congratulates Ellenoah Oti and Abel Papai on their success and looks forward to following their journey.
