Cook Islands Tourism has prioritised the development of tourism amenities in areas of high visitor interest across the Cook Islands. These areas of interest have included the popular beaches of Matai and Taungaroro in Atiu whereby their existing beach shelters have undergone major repairs and upgrades. 

Atiu's Tourism Officer, Mareta Atetu shares "these shelters not only provide a safe and secure area to protect you from all elements but also offers a place for our families to come together and strengthen the community" Public tourism amenities such as the ones in Atiu contribute to recreational spots that can be utilised by tour guides, visitors and the community that essentially helps to enhance experiences all round.
