What are some good ways to make your content more relevant and timeless? Content that is still relevant after a long time and keeps driving traffic is known as evergreen content.

A study by Parse.ly found that a majority of the top 100 sites in their network get a significant portion of their pageviews from evergreen content

You might consider creating an evergreen format for your project. These formats are generally popular and can help keep your project organized and consistent.

  • Listicles
  • Tips
  • How-to content
  • Product Reviews
  • Videos

Producing in these formats does not automatically make your piece evergreen, but these types of content do tend to lend themselves to evergreen writing more than other formats.

Some ideas for evergreen content include:

  • Traveling to the Cook Islands: Need to know guide
  • How to best prepare for a day of hiking in Rarotonga
  • How to become a pro at kite surfing the lagoons of the Cook Islands
  • Our favorite snorkeling spots in Aitutaki
  • Our favorite Cook Islands cocktails
  • What is traditional Cook Islands food?

Of course, these ideas may not be relevant to everyone – you'll need to do research specific to your industry and audience to develop appropriate topics.

It can be difficult to create original content about evergreen topics, as many of the most popular industry topics have been covered many times. In this case, you should add your own unique spin to the topic or search for long-tail keywords with high traffic but less competition. This will make your content more valuable and more likely to appear in the search engine results.

For those of you who are new to evergreen content, here are a few tips that may help you produce quality content that will keep your readers coming back:

  1. Choose the right keywords. We briefly mentioned earlier that long-tail keywords work best. Even the longest-lived evergreen isn't worth much if people aren't searching for that topic, so do some keyword research.
  2. Optimize for SEO. Add alt text to images and include the keyword in the title, URL, and all body—but don't overstuff your keywords! You should also link related evergreen articles together to improve SEO ranking.
  3. Please keep your comments and advice specific to beginners. Experts are not likely to be searching on broad topics, and you want to provide quality content that is valuable to a large and recurring audience.

Evergreen content is great, but don't get stuck in a rut. Keep producing content that is timely and topical too. The best content marketing strategy incorporates a mix of evergreen posts and more topical articles.

Once you have created valuable content that remains relevant over time, don't just leave it on your blog. If you publish your content and neglect to promote it, you will not receive the results you hoped for. Instead, make an effort to highlight your valuable content so that it is immediately visible and accessible to site visitors.

Jeff Bezos once said, “Focus on things that don’t change.”
