Celebrating Women in Cook Islands Tourism

Women are the heart of the Cook Islands, playing a vital role in tourism, family life, and community. From running businesses in Rarotonga to showcasing creative artistry in the outer islands, their contributions extend far beyond economics. As caretakers, leaders, and cultural stewards, they give back with inspiring dedication and passion.

Aunty Pai Chambers, previously celebrated as Tourism Woman of the Month, is one of the many women who have shaped the tourism industry. Her work in tourism, cultural preservation, and community service has had a lasting impact. Aunty Pai's dedication to promoting Cook Islands culture through her business, sponsorships, and involvement in local organisations embodies the spirit of selfless service that is characteristic of Cook Islands women.

Women set the tone for family life and business across the Cook Islands. They manage accommodations, lead tours, and balance entrepreneurship with caregiving, ensuring traditions remain strong. In the Pa Enua, women express their creativity through traditional crafts like 'ei katu and rito hats, sharing their cultural heritage with deep pride for their islands, ancestors, and future generations.

At a beautiful celebration held at the Islander Hotel on Thursday 26 September 2024, Aunty Connie Halligan was named and honoured as the Tourism Woman of the Month. Aunty Connie exemplifies the mana of a true Cook Islands woman. Her deep involvement in tourism, combined with her unwavering commitment to family and community, reflects the values that Cook Islands women hold dear. Aunty Connie's tireless work in the tourism sector and dedication to cultural preservation have earned her respect and admiration in both the tourism industry and local community life.

The Cook Islands is built on strong family values, with women serving as the backbone. They lead across both public and private sectors, gracefully bridging tradition and modernity. Their passion for family, homeland, and heritage drives their selfless contributions, ensuring that the Cook Islands remains not only a beautiful destination but also a nurturing home.

As we celebrate Women in Tourism, we recognise the countless contributions these remarkable women make. Their efforts reflect the strength and enduring values of the Cook Islands community—family, culture, and service.
