Rarotonga, Cook Islands – Monday 29 July 2024
Discover the Heart of Sustainable Gardening with the Arataki Organic Garden Tour
Step into a world where community spirit and sustainable living thrive. The Arataki Organic Garden Tour, led by passionate locals Mirella and Katoa Mairi, offers a unique journey into the heart of organic farming and regenerative gardening.
Cook Islands Tourism, through their incubator program, has supported Mirella and Katoa in bringing their dream to reality. Jeremy Goodwin, the Regenerative Tourism Manager, emphasizes that the focus isn't on creating a structured tour, but on showcasing how locals care for and love their paradise. This tour provides visitors with an authentic insight into Cook Islanders' dedication to their home through organic farming.
In 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and limited shipments to Rarotonga, the Mairi family transformed their backyard into a diverse and productive edible garden. This initiative not only sustained their family but also nurtured the community. Their commitment to regenerative gardening and sustainable agriculture has grown into a vibrant array of fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants, thriving in harmony with nature.
Katoa and his family have opened their garden to community groups and Non-Government Organisations, hosting workshops and serving as a hub for sustainable gardening insights and tools. Their mission is to empower others to cultivate their own green spaces with confidence.
The Arataki Organic Garden Tour is more than just a garden tour; it is an invitation to be part of a movement dedicated to preserving our beloved enua (land) for generations to come. Join us every Tuesday at 9 AM for a two-hour immersive experience and witness firsthand the beauty and resilience of sustainable gardening.
