Cook Islands Tourism and the Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute (CITTI) have renewed their commitment to delivering the popular Kia Orana Series training with a new grant agreement signed this month.

The Kia Orana Series focuses on teaching our shared Cook Islands values, the importance of good customer service, and how to handle complaints in a respectful and professional way. It’s about encouraging positive behaviour - within our communities and with our visitors - by grounding us in the values that make our culture special.

“This training is a core part of our capability building work,” says Tina Kae, Industry Development Manager at Cook Islands Tourism. “When we lead with our values, we uplift the whole industry—from front-of-house staff to tour operators and beyond.”

Leading the training is the ever-energetic Rose Akava, who continues to be the heart and soul of the sessions. “Every session is different, and I love it!” says Rose. “Seeing people light up when something clicks, hearing them share their own stories, and watching them walk out just that little bit taller—it fills my cup every time - whether they’re learning it for the first time or just refreshing their knowledge. There’s always something new to take away.”

Over the years, the partnership between CITTI and Cook Islands Tourism has grown stronger, with training sessions delivered more frequently and with greater reach. The feedback continues to be overwhelmingly positive from learners and employers alike.

CEO of Cook Islands Tourism, Karla Eggelton, says, “The values presented in these trainings are simple but powerful reminder of who we are. We’re proud to support this initiative that not only lifts service standards, but reconnects us with what really matters—our people and our values.”

As this partnership continues to grow, so too will the impact of the Kia Orana Series - building not only skills, but a stronger, more connected tourism industry.
