New ropes installed to ensure a safer Cross Island Trek route
For those of you doing the Cross-Island walk soon, you will notice changes to the paths you can take from the top. The eastern path ('turn left') has always been the official pathway across, but over time another path (‘pipeline trach’) has become popular. This pathway however, crosses very closely to one of Rarotonga's main electricity cables, the Cross Island feeder.
This cable is a critical piece of infrastructure which, due to its age, is often accessed by Te Aponga Uira for repairs and maintenance. Te Aponga Uira are now working with us to make it clear this pathway is not a public access-way, and walkers should not use the path to ensure their safety and to enable safe and timely access to the path for Te Aponga's team.
New signage, and a barrier, will soon be installed across the path to make it clear it is not to be used by the public. Please update your guests of the changes, or encourage them to follow the new signs and to respect the safety barrier once it's installed. Maunga Tours owner and guide Bruce Goldsworthy is working with Te Aponga Uira to install safety ropes along the eastern path to ensure a safer and more secure route. Cook Islands Tourism always recommend to go with a guide, see our safety messages HERE!
