Te Maeva Nui 2025 - 60th Anniversary Constitution Celebrations
Te Maeva Nui
Te Maeva Nui is more than just a festival, it’s the beating heart of Cook Islands cultural pride. Celebrated each year in early August to mark the anniversary of our nation’s self-governance on August 4th, this week-long event is a powerful expression of who we are as a people.
From its beginnings, Te Maeva Nui has grown into the most significant cultural celebration in the Cook Islands calendar. It brings together communities from across the archipelago and around the world—uniting us through the rich tapestry of our traditions. Through vibrant performances of song and dance, intricate handicrafts, the rhythms of drumming and chanting, and the unforgettable tastes of our traditional foods, Te Maeva Nui tells the living story of our heritage, resilience, and shared identity.
This festival is a moment to honour our tūpuna (ancestors), to celebrate our present, and to inspire the generations to come. It’s a time when the mana of our culture is felt deeply in every home, every village, every performance.
Countdown to Te Maeva Nui
Te Maeva Nui 2025
Te Maeva Nui 2025 promises to be one of the most heartfelt celebrations yet, a powerful homecoming for many. This year, we open our arms to welcome back our families from Te Pa Enua and from across the diaspora, especially those who have been away in New Zealand, Australia, and beyond.
After years of distance, this reunion will be more than just a celebration—it will be a reconnection of spirit, of culture, of aro‘a (love). Each performance, each beat of the pate, each note sung will carry the weight of our shared journeys and the joy of returning home.
This year’s theme is one of reconnection and revival. We invite everyone—young and old, near and far—to join us in celebrating the unbreakable bond we share as Cook Islanders. Let this Te Maeva Nui remind us of who we are, where we come from, and how strong we are when we stand together.
