Custodians of our little paradise
Mana Tiaki translates as the power of guardianship which is bestowed upon us as proud Cook Islanders, and we extend this to all our visitors to our little paradise. As you embark on your journey to experience the wonders of our little paradise, we invite you to embrace the Mana (power) and become an active participant in preserving its beauty.
Mana Tiaki is woven into the very fabric of our culture, it is a tradition we've embraced for generations. It is core value with the Kia Orana Values, the guiding principles of our island communities. Mana Tiaki is about fostering positive change and ensuring destinations like ours thrive for years to come.
By seeking adventure, cultural connection, and opportunities to make a positive impact, you become more than just a tourist. You become a responsible traveler, a cultural ambassador, and an advocate for the sustainable future of our little paradise.
Principles of Mana Tiaki
TUPURANGA TANGATA
Development of Our People
While it’s tempting to just relax on our beautiful beaches, please keep in mind that tourism is vital for our small island’s economy. By spending locally, you directly contribute to our economic and social well-being. Support locally-owned businesses, road-side stalls and market vendors or even participate in cultural workshops and learn traditional crafts from artisans. If you can, travel outside of peak season (May-Sep)and make a visit the Pa Enua (outer islands) to spread the love.
AKONO I TE AORANGI
Preserve our natural environment
As guardians of this beautiful island environment, our responsibility lies in using its natural resources wisely for a sustainable future. We're all fortunate to enjoy these wonders, and together we can protect them. Let's show our respect for nature by making eco-friendly choices. This means minimising water and power use, avoiding single-use plastics, and opting for reef-safe sunscreen or rash guards to preserve our precious coral reefs. Choose to use public transportation to take the family to dinner one evening, sorting your waste at accommodation, going with guides who emphasise the importance of conservation. Every little bit goes a long way.
TURANGA EVANGELIA
Respect for all people
The Cook Islands embrace a spirit of mutual respect. Our warm hospitality extends to visitors, encouraging them to experience the courtesy and respect we hold for one another's cultural and religious beliefs. Here, you have the unique opportunity to connect with locals and immerse yourself in the community. To best support this welcoming environment, we recommend seeking out experiences that benefit local initiatives, dressing modestly in public and non-beach areas, and being mindful of religious practices.
PEU MAORI
Embrace our traditions, customs and lifestyle
Peu Maori is the traditions and lifestyle of people indigenous to the Cook Islands. We proudly perpetuate these customs, and visitors are immersed in our way of life. Through this immersion, they gain appreciation, understanding, and value for our heritage. Sharing our culture with visitors isn't just enriching for them, it helps keep these traditions alive! Approach cultural encounters with respect, and embrace the opportunity to learn even more. Attend a live cultural show, browse locally made arts and crafts, or embark on a cultural tour - all fantastic ways to deepen your understanding.
