Te Vaka O Ru 's 24th Round
The 24th round of Cook Islands Tourism’s Mana Tiaki programme, Te Vaka O Ru, was held today in Aitutaki
The TVOR committee, comprised of seven members representing a cross-section of the community, reviewed 11 digital applications — a new feature introduced in 2025, to streamline the application process and enhance accessibility.
Following careful deliberation, the winners were proudly agreed upon:
Akono I Te Ao Rangi Category (4 Winners) Equal 1st Place: Oire Ureia & Reureu Youth, Equal 2nd Place: Oire Tautu & Oire Amuri
Peu Maori Category (1 Winner) Aitutaki Dancer of the Year Committee
All four villages excelled in beautifying public spaces, such as Tautu Wharf, Amuri Field, and village halls, so all will benefit from either petrol or cash grants presented to them on the day.
Oire Ureia was a highlight for the planting of Tamanu trees along their shoreline, which will help to prevent coastal erosion and perpetuate Indigenous carving practices to be continued in the future. Reureu Youth were also commended for their efforts in not only beautifying public spaces but also for offering service to their village's elderly residents.
Aitutaki's Dancer of the Year Committee received a $1,000 grant to support the island's local dance competition on April 8th, which selected Aitutaki's representatives for the National Te Mire Ura events being held from the 23rd of April in Rarotonga. Mereana Bishop, Aitutaki's cultural officer and Te Vaka O Ru committee member, said, "In today’s world of increasing global influences, especially through technology, it’s more important than ever for us to platform and celebrate our Peu Maori. This event was a vibrant showcase of cultural pride and the communal development of Aitutaki's performing arts."
The Te Vaka O Ru committee, alongside Te Mato Manava Turoto (CIT), sincerely applauds all of Round 24's winners for their significant contributions to Aitutaki's community, environment, and tourism experience. Meitaki Atupaka!
