Vaka Eiva 2024; A Celebration of Va’a, Culture, and Community
The Cook Islands Canoeing Association (CICA) is excited to announce the return of Vaka Eiva, a week-long international Va’a competition set to take place on the stunning island of Rarotonga. This unique event is much more than a race—it’s a vibrant celebration of the Va’a tradition, blending sport, culture, and community in a way that captures the heart of the Cook Islands.
Vaka Eiva’s inclusive format welcomes paddlers of all ages and skill levels, from juniors as young as 10 years old to seasoned athletes in their golden years. With races ranging from sprints to the iconic Round Raro change-over, the competition attracts everyone from first-time paddlers to experienced Va’a teams. Solo paddlers and teams alike will find something to challenge and inspire them.
Culture plays a central role in Vaka Eiva. The event begins with the traditional Akatapu Vaka blessing, followed by days of racing interwoven with Cook Islands performances, food, and music. The local community shares its traditions with visitors through exhibitions, canoe carving demonstrations, and the inclusion of traditional motifs in event merchandise and trophies.
Vaka Eiva is also a community-driven event. Paddle art exhibitions showcase local talent, and trade days provide small businesses the opportunity to share their crafts with international visitors. The popular Boiler Swim, open to all for a small donation, raises funds for local charities such as Autism Cook Islands, reinforcing the event’s spirit of generosity and inclusivity.
The event promotes environmental sustainability by adopting best practices such as providing reusable drink bottles, offering filtered water stations, and partnering with local businesses to reduce waste. In addition, CICA actively participates in foreshore cleanups to protect the beautiful waterways that are central to the competition.
For many, Va’a is more than a sport; it’s a way of life that supports physical and mental wellbeing. The camaraderie and joy that come from paddling, whether competitively or leisurely, offer participants a unique sense of peace and accomplishment.
Beyond the water, Vaka Eiva brings economic benefits to the Cook Islands. The event draws paddlers and supporters from around the world, boosting the local tourism industry during the low season. This year we expect around 500 visitors to embark on our shores for the competition. From accommodation and restaurants to local markets, the economic impact ripples through the entire community.
Vaka Eiva offers a truly unique experience for paddlers and spectators alike. Join us in celebrating the Cook Islands’ rich culture, community spirit, and the thrilling sport of Va’a from 22 to 29 Nov 2024. To register, click here
