Cook Islands Tourism Proudly Supports Year 9 Māori Speech Competition: A Celebration of Language, Identity & Mana Tiaki
This year, Cook Islands Tourism Corporation proudly sponsored the Year 9 Cook Islands Māori Speech Competition — a powerful evening celebrating language, identity, and cultural guardianship.
This year, Cook Islands Tourism Corporation was honoured to fully sponsor the Year 9 Cook Islands Māori Speech Competition, a powerful celebration of language, identity, and cultural guardianship.
The evening was nothing short of inspiring as our young orators took to the stage, breathing life into the theme of Mana Tiaki – the concept of being custodians of our environment, culture, and people.
A standout message that echoed through the night came from the children themselves – “It’s not just about being a custodian. First, you must know where you belong, how you belong, and how your island is unique. Only then can you truly protect it.” This reminder served as a challenge not only to their peers, but to the wider audience: before we can care for our paradise, we must understand our deep connection to it.
This year’s winners were:
Makiroa Patia from Nukuroa – First Place ($350)
Matamanea Atareanga from Enuamanu – Second Place ($250)
Lucia Tararo from Akatokamanava – Third Place ($150)
All other participating students received a $50 cash prize, recognising their outstanding effort and courage to stand and speak with pride.
The panel of judges faced no easy task, as each student brought strength, clarity, and mana to their delivery. But what was clear by the end of the night was that the future of the Cook Islands is in capable hands. Our young people are rising with pride in their language, heritage, and identity.
Cook Islands Tourism extends a huge congratulations to every student who participated. We are proud of you all and wish you every success in your future studies. May you continue to stand tall in your identity, speak proudly in your reo, and walk boldly into the future as guardians of our little paradise.
