GSTC Destination Assessment: Strengthening Sustainable Tourism in the Cook Islands

By
Cook Islands Tourism

Following our recent membership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), the Cook Islands has completed its first GSTC Destination Assessment — a significant step in refining our approach to sustainable tourism. This independent review provides a clear framework to enhance how we prioritise our community, culture, and environment while shaping the future of tourism in the Cook Islands.

The assessment evaluates our destination against globally recognised sustainability criteria, offering external insights that complement the local expertise gathered through community sentiment surveys and stakeholder workshops across Rarotonga, Aitutaki, and the Pa Enua. Together, these insights form a comprehensive picture of where we stand and where improvements are needed.

One of the key takeaways from the GSTC report is the identification of gaps and opportunities in sustainable practices. The Cook Islands Tourism team is already addressing these gaps, ensuring that tourism continues to benefit both residents and visitors while preserving our unique cultural and environmental heritage. These findings will also inform the ongoing Destination Stewardship Planning, shaping long-term strategies to maintain a responsible and resilient tourism industry.

By aligning with international best practices, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and ensuring that the Cook Islands remains a world-class destination—one that balances growth with the well-being of our people and natural surroundings.
