Air New Zealand Rarotonga Triathlon 2025: Celebrating 31 Years of Sporting Spirit

The stunning island of Rarotonga is once again set to welcome athletes from across the globe for the 31st Annual Air New Zealand Rarotonga Triathlon, running from Thursday 1 May to Tuesday 6 May 2025. This landmark event continues its tradition of celebrating both elite and recreational athletes in a vibrant and scenic setting.

For over three decades, Air New Zealand has proudly supported the event as its lead sponsor, alongside valued supporting sponsors The Edgewater Resort & Spa, Bank South Pacific, and Cook Islands Tourism. Together, they have helped establish the triathlon as a premier sporting and cultural occasion in the South Pacific.

The main race will take place on Saturday 3 May 2025, featuring an Olympic Distance triathlon: a 1.5km swim in the crystal-clear lagoon at Tikioki, a 41km non-drafting cycle leg on Rarotonga’s main road, and a challenging 10km run through the island’s stunning southeast coastline. The event will start and finish at the beautiful beachside triathlon site adjacent to Enua Manea Hall in Tikioki.

The course, first introduced in 2016, has earned high praise for its natural beauty and demanding layout. Athletes face not only the tropical heat and humidity but also contend with a technical road surface and a non-drafting cycle leg, adding to the challenge and prestige of the race. Despite the testing conditions, participants relish the rewarding experience of competing in one of the world's most picturesque triathlons.

While the new Tikioki course records remain unbeaten, historic records from the earlier course still stand as benchmarks of excellence. Kiwi legend Bryan Rhodes set the open record in 1998 with a time of 1:58:18, a record that has narrowly survived serious challenges, including a close attempt by Australian Jason Metters in 2001, who finished just four seconds shy.

In the women’s category, Debbie Tanner’s formidable record of 2:09:38, set in 2006, has withstood all efforts to surpass it, with Sam Warriner coming within just 10 seconds of breaking it in 2015.

The Air New Zealand Rarotonga Triathlon embraces athletes of all levels, from competitive elites to passionate recreational competitors. Many return year after year, driven by personal goals and the sheer enjoyment of the event's warm, welcoming spirit. For international visitors, it offers the perfect blend of sport and tropical holiday.

The Cook Islands Triathlon Association expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Raina family for granting access to the Tikioki site, and to the Cook Islands Police for facilitating a safe and enjoyable event through managed road closures and detours.

With its breathtaking backdrop, community spirit, and rich history, the 2025 Air New Zealand Rarotonga Triathlon promises another unforgettable chapter in the story of this iconic event. We welcome athletes, families, and supporters to join us for this special occasion on Rarotonga’s shores.
