Jetstar Introduces Fifth Weekly Non-Stop Service from Sydney to Rarotonga Strengthening Connections and Supporting the Cook Islands Community
Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Honourable Mark Brown, today announced the exciting news of Jetstar’s fifth weekly non-stop service between Sydney and Rarotonga, set to begin from May to October 2025. This significant development will enhance the growing ties between Australia and the Cook Islands, with a 25% rise in Australian visitors expected next year compared to 2024.
CEO Karla Eggelton of Cook Islands Tourism highlighted the growing demand for direct access from Australia, stating, "We have seen incredible interest from Australians in visiting the Cook Islands, and this additional flight will significantly enhance connectivity. With Rarotonga just a 5.5-hour flight from Sydney, more Australians are discovering the unique beauty and experiences our islands have to offer, and this increased airlift will make it even easier for them to explore our pristine paradise."
The introduction of this fifth weekly service for 6 months of the year is expected to bring over 40,000 Australian visitors in 2025. Jetstar will now operate flights departing Sydney on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9:30 p.m., arriving in Rarotonga on the same day.
Expanding Tourism Beyond Rarotonga
The additional air service will benefit not only Rarotonga, the most visited island, but also Aitutaki, with its world-renowned lagoon, and other islands such as Atiu. Australians’ inclination to explore beyond the main island and contribute to the economy of more remote areas supports sustainable tourism growth across the Cook Islands.
Eggelton added, "Not only are we providing more access for our Australian visitors, but we are also encouraging them to explore the diversity of our islands. Aitutaki, Atiu, and our outer islands are gaining more attention, which is no surprise as there are incredible unique experiences our islands offer."
Coinciding with the announcement of the additional weekly flight, Jetstar has also launched a special "Mindlessness Sale," offering holiday packages that include return flights and 5 nights’ accommodation at The Edgewater Resort and Spa starting from $1,222 per person (twin share). This sale offers Australians an easy and affordable way to plan their next escape to the Cook Islands.
